Without any warning (other than the announcement of an upcoming tour which I have already purchased tickets for) Sufjan Stevens has gone and released a new digital EP. It's 8 songs, two of which are well over 10 minutes long, so you could just as easily call it an full album. I have been listening to it a lot in the short time that I've had it and I can already tell these songs are going to stick around in my iPod for a while, they are beautiful. I am espically taken by the strings at the end of the title track "All Delighted People." Check it out if you don't mind the 7 minutes and 40 seconds to get there, it's worth it.

This movie is absolutely amazing, I went with my buddy Chris who doesn't like horror all that music and even he loved it. I highly, highly recommend it.

Grimm Love Interview With TS Faull

A few weeks back you may remember me posting about an amazing film that I watched, called Grimm Love. I was really, really blown away by this movie, especially the delicate way the relationship of it's two main characters was handled. It's horrific without using the usual horror clichés, opting instead for genuine emotion and realism.

Twitter is truly a magical thing. Not long after I posted about how fantastic Grimm Love was I noticed this tweet from Grimm Love's writer, TS Faull:

How incredibly flattering! Me and TS have been talking back and forth online, and a few days ago I asked if I could do an interview about the writing of Grimm Love. I was prompted to do this for a few reasons. First of all, as a viewer, and a follew artist, I am genuinely very interested in some of the great creative choices made in this script. Second, Grimm Love is currently involved in something called the Fangoria Fright Fest and it needs your help to see a theatrical release. Details of how you can do this are posted in the interview below, and it's well worth it because if there is one thing the world needs, it's good, thoughtful horror in theaters.

So without further ado, my interview with Grimm Love writer, TS Faull.

Q: I remember first hearing about the Armin Meiwes murder and being fascinated by the way that everything came together between these two people. What was it about this particular story that made you decide to write a script based on it?

A: I read about the Meiwes case on the internet when it first happened. A couple of years later, my manager called me and told me that a production company was making a movie about the case. They needed a script - and that's when I came aboard. Like Katie in the movie, I'm drawn to dark things, sometimes to an obsessive degree, and I wanted to get into the heads of these men and figure out what drove them to this act.

Q: From what I already know about those events, your script seemed to portray the way things took place quite accurately. What was the research process like for you? Also, how much of the story, as you know it, was altered for your retelling?

A: The movie is largely accurate, which is why it was banned in Germany for a few years. Armin Meiwes sued the production, claiming that we didn't have a right to make a movie inspired by his story. I did most of my research on the internet, but I also had access to court documents. I did fictionalize the story to a certain extent. My characters are named Oliver Hartwin (the cannibal) and Simon Grombeck (the volunteer). Katie is a purely fictional construct. But I feel the movie is extremely true to the case, overall.

Q: I was struck by the way you scripted the intimate moments between these two men. They have only just met, but because of the parallels between their secret desires, they interact like lovers who have known each other forever. How did you decide to craft the dialog of their relationship that way? Was it difficult to find a realistic balance of hesitation and relief at finally finding a partner?

A: This relationship was so unusual and unique, scripting their night together really required nuance. I relied on Meiwes' account of the evening, as well as emails the two exchanged, and drew dialogue from that. Some lines people consider outrageous were things they actually said to each other! There was even more dialogue between them in the script that didn't make it into the movie, but I think the movie really captures the awkwardness, intimacy, and gravity of their meeting.

Q: The film really moved me because you were able to retain (the Armin character’s) humanity despite the terrible things he did. It’s almost like the horrific part is the audience realizing that they empathize with someone who could have easily been portrayed as a villain. What did you do to keep the humanity in his character?

A: For me, Oliver (the Armin character) was never a villain. He was an extremely isolated, lonely, socially awkward man who felt he'd been abandoned in his youth. He wanted someone who would never leave him, who would stay with him forever, and he believed if he ate someone, he could achieve eternal togetherness with that person. He only wanted to eat someone who volunteered, who wanted to be with him in this way. There's even a scene - and this really happened - where a man comes over, Oliver is going to slaughter him, and then he realizes that the man is just role-playing, he doesn't really want to die. And Oliver lets him go. I never lost sight of his humanity and never viewed him as a monster.

Q: There are essentially two storylines going on throughout the movie, the one between the two characters in the past, and the one in the present with Katie, (played by Keri Russell), researching the case. How did you decide to tell the story in this way?

A: I felt that this movie needed a female presence - not to appease straight viewers, but creatively and artistically this is what I felt the story needed. I also wanted to have a character to serve as the audience's avatar - someone who's curious about this case like we are, who could lead us into the story. Katie serves that function in the movie and I think it works.

My script didn't have the narration that you hear in the movie. That was added in post-production because many of Katie's scenes were cut. I think the producers wanted to keep the focus on the men, with Katie as a sort of tour guide. I like that, I do think it works, but I was trying to achieve something more with Katie. She had a boyfriend in a longer cut, played by Nikolai Kinski (Klaus' son! I was so happy when he was cast). I viewed Katie as self-destructive. She has a dark side this case brings out in her, and she puts herself in jeopardy. Some of these scenes were cut out of the script just before filming and never shot, which is why nothing more happens with Katie and the cannibal message board. And other scenes didn't make the final cut. It's the nature of filmmaking. There is a fuller version of Katie's story in the director's cut. I haven't even seen this cut, but maybe one day - if there's enough interest - a director's cut will make its way to DVD.

Q: Grimm Love is one of the eight movies currently in the running for Fangoria Frightfest. The movie with the best vote is going to see a theatrical release. How did you get involved in this and what can people do who are interested in getting involved?

A: I'm thrilled to be part of Fangoria Fright Fest. As a kid, I read Fangoria all the time. Fangoria has partnered with Lightning Media to release eight horror films - including GRIMM LOVE - on DVD. One of those films will get a theatrical release in late July, prior to the DVD release. So - people who want to see GRIMM LOVE on the big screen can go to www.fangoriafrightfest.com and rate GRIMM's trailer highly - five skulls. The trailer with the highest rating will get a theatrical release. Voting has already started and ends July 19. Spread the word, get your friends to vote. All support is appreciated.

Q: What can you reveal about the upcoming projects you are working on? Do you plan on staying in the horror realm?

A: I'm a huge horror fan. It's really hard to get an original horror film made right now, but yes, horror is my favorite genre and I love horror movies and thrillers and want to make those kinds of movies. Right now I'm working on a crime thriller - it's Hitchcockian but also has an Altman/PT Anderson vibe, with its focus on an ensemble cast of characters. There's a very cool director involved but I can't announce anything yet. I also have a horror script I wrote that I'd love to direct. It's structurally like PSYCHO but the characters are mostly women, so in that sense it's like THE DESCENT. It's a supernatural horror movie and I'd like to try to get that going in the next year or so.

Tetris World Record Breakthrough!

As most of you know, I am going to be going down to LA in August to be a part of the Classic Tetris World Championship in August. This came about for many reasons, not the least of which is the fact that I am currently the world record holder for the 9th highest Tetris score ever recorded. Well, at least I used to be...

I have been training pretty hard for the competition because, although I am obviously very good at Tetris, as far as the World Championships I am definitely the underdog. There are some absolutely incredible players expected to attend. During this practice time however, I have also been attempting to break my previous world record and last night I did just that.

Barring some horrible mistake by the US Postal service (and even then, I have a backup tape), 668,515 points is soon to be the 5th highest Tetris score of all time, as played by Daniel Anderson.

Hopefully this is a wave that I can ride all the way to the tournament, which you can find out more about right here. I know that I have a lot of fans and friends in Los Angeles already, so I expect to see you all there showing your support! I want to see signs people!

Luddites Beware

I just finished The Singularity Is Near by Ray Kurzweil. It is an absolutely fantastic dissection of that rapid growth of technology, specifically the greatly overlooked fact that information technologies are advancing not at a linear rate, but an exponential one. Kurzweil is a fantastic writer, and he approaches the material with the brain of a scientist, giving pages and pages of evidence and explanation (about 300 or so), before diving headfirst into the detailed ramifications. In the interest of grabbing your attention, and because I usually write like a novelist as opposed to a scientist, I am going to start with the ramifications and work backwards.

What is the future going to look like? Well, it depends on how far ahead you want to go, obviously, but what most people don't often understand is how much if going to change in an incredibly short span of time. As the book explains in great detail, we often look at the growth of technology as a linear curve when predicting the future. In other words, when approached with the task of imagining what the world will be like a hundred years from now, one will often think of the world one hundred years before and hypothesis, based on this, what is next. In reality, however, we are at the base of a curve in exponential growth in technology, so when projecting our expectations for the next hundred years, we might be better served to imagine billions of years of progress. Based on his calculations, Ray Kurzweil believes that we will have cured death by this time, and that technology will have progressed so far that we will essentially have filled the universe with sentient matter and energy in the form of nanobots representing our collectively reverse engineered brains, in what he describes as The Singularity. But then, that's jumping ahead a little to far isn't it?

You are probably already reassuring yourself that this somewhat terrifying concept is the lazily concocted ravings of a mad scientist. Who is this guy anyway?

Ray Kurzweil is a scientist, inventor, author and futurist, among other things. Kurzweil one of five members on the United States Army Science Advisory Board, he has received 19 honorary doctorates in various fields and won more scientific recognitions than I could even list here. He invented many of the technologies that we use every day, including scanners, speech recognition software and the first synthesizers of classical instruments. Forbes magazine ranked him as the #8 entrepreneur in the United States and described him as the “rightful heir to Thomas Edison.” Bill Gates describes him as "the best person I know at predicting the future of artificial intelligence." Suffice to say, the guy knows what he's talking about.

Because the book is 652 pages of, what some might consider, fairly dense material, attempting to summarize the concept of The Singularity in my little blog here is not going to be all that insightful compared to the actual book, which I highly recommend, but here goes.

The best way to start talking about The Singularity is to explain Moore's Law. Essentially, this is a way of describing the very apparent, long-term observation that the amount of computer hardware transistors we are capable of placing on a circuit is doubling approximately every year. This is a form of exponential growth which, by it's nature, will start slow, gradually curve, and then take off into the sky at an almost infinitely straight line. Note that the graph below is not actually linear, but displayed in approximate powers of 10.

But transistors are not the only thing growing at this rate, essential all computational technology is, while simultaneously retaining efficent costs. At the rate we have been going, the calculations of a computer worth 1000$ will surpass the intelligence of all the humans on earth by around 2040.

Or I could just let Ray explain it:

There are plenty of arguments to take into account. As my younger brother put it to me about a month ago, "People get really stoked about exponential growth because they remember learning about it in math class. They see that line going off into nowhere, but what they don't realize is that exponential growth almost never continues like that in real life." This is absolutely true. A metaphor that people often use for this is the story of a group of rabbits that find a new habitat in the form of a canyon, a small population enters and begins breeding exponentially (10 rabbits, then 20, 40, 80, 160, 320, 640, 1280, 2560, and so on). Eventually, this explosion will have to slow because there is not longer enough food to support the rabbits in this habitat, and the pattern of growth will level off into what is called an S curve.

The Singularity does has an S curve, based on the energy and resources that we have available to us, and most of the book is spent calculating what that is. Amazingly however, through the development of new technology such as quantum computing, or reversible computing, Kurzweil estimates the top of that S curve to be a "virtually unlimited limit". Specifically, he estimates the "capacity of matter and energy in our solar system to support computation to be at 10 to the 70 power calculations per second."

There are many other criqutes of Kurzweil's predictions, and he fortunately includes a "Response To Critics" section at the end to go over most of these. Additionally, they are already explained pretty well in the primary text.

If this book is to be believed, the future that we are about to experience is going to me an amazing and beautiful place. It's a text that's definitely worth checking out, or you could just wait for one of the many documentaries coming out this year.

Male Heterosexuality: A Celebration

Over the past weekend the beautiful city of Bellingham was treated to an event known as Ladyfest, a art festival celebrated across the globe in honor of all that is female, and then some. Started in Olympia, Washington in 2000, the festival has showcased a lot of amazing musicians and grown into something of a phenomenon, and while the actual specifics of the festivals ethical identity change slightly from place to place, there is a really positive message for the most part.

As far as the Bellingham version of Ladyfest goes, I have some issues with a few of the specifics regarding their message, and with their approach to spreading it. I have found myself involved in discussions about the subject due to the fact that a huge amount of my friends are involved in some way or another. It's also probably due to the fact that I really like to discuss and debate issues, especially ones of policy or morality.

Anyway, one of these discussions was carried out on a facebook thread of mine, that eventually sprawled into a 38 post masterpiece. One of my long winded responses was then taken somewhat out of context and used as an intro for a film that was made for Ladyfest. This film is brilliantly titled, Male Heterosexuality: A Celebration.

I should probably point out right away that, in the format my quote is presented, it is made to sound like I believe that straight males should be celebrated at Ladyfest, which is literally the opposite of what I am actually saying. In fact the next sentence that was conveniently omitted is literally: "Now, I don’t particularly think that straight males have been getting the short end of the stick and need to have their own special day." I also went on further to say that my main issue with the ethics behind Ladyfest is that they DON'T claim to be exclusive when they should be proud of it. We are all different, and sometimes when you are trying to celebrate a certain group of people I think it's okay to wear that on your sleeve. Another thing that is slightly confusing is that a large chunk of this quote is actually me quoting them, which is only an issue because I find the word "q*eer" a little distasteful and don't actually use that in my own personal speech.

So if I was taken out of context, then why am I posting? Well, for a lot of reasons.

First of all, I don't really mind having my words put in funny places every once in a while, I am a pretty laid back person and really it's not all that bad. I know quite a few of the people that made this and their intentions obviously aren't malicious, further evidenced by the fact that they kept it anonymous (although I obviously don't mind because I am revealing myself here.) I also think there is a lot of humor in the coincidence that the particular thread this was lifted from was originally about a friend of mine being taken out of context. Second, it's just good writing on their part. The paragraph I posted is a perfect setup for the punch line and if I was the one making this I can't say I would've it any differently. In addition to that, it's just really, really well made. The dialog is super clever and it's very funny, although pretty creepy towards the end, and well crafted. Third, it's got something to do with me, so why not post it in my blog?

Finally, and not at the least of all important point, is that ultimately the message of this video, however heavy handed, is a very, very important one. You can interpret the statistics presented here in a manner of ways (the breakneck speed at which they are delivered is actually my only technical qualm with the video. I would like to be able to read them better), but the overwhelming truth is that there are some very serious issues that need to be addressed concerning women's rights and relaxed attitudes towards things like sexual assault.

Be warned, it goes from black humor to downright disturbing pretty quickly, but if you can stomach that kind of thing it's worth the watch. Click on the image below to check it out!

I have recently done some work with a group called Sirocco Research Labs, of which I am a member. Everyone involved has there own projects as well as there own particular skill set, but the members often come together to make fantastic art. I'd like to think of us as the new Wu-Tang clan, and I would also like to think of myself as our RZA. However, In reality I am the U-God of the group.

Delorean: Good Car, Great Band

Originally, this blog was going to serve as nothing more than an MP3 blog, where I was going to share the various songs that I was into at any given time and post about bands. Things have obviously evolved and by now I post whatever I want, but recently a group has come along that is fantastic enough to warrant a good ol' check-these-guys-out post.

Delorean is a Spanish band that has been around for quite a while, although I had never heard of them until the release of their latest record, Subiza, in March of this year. I can't speak for the rest of their albums because I haven't heard them, but after having this one for only about a month now, I can already tell that it's close to a dance masterpiece.

Sonically, it's the opitimy of what I like to call 90s dance. Sliced up, unintelligible vocals repeating over classic House beats, rhythmic triplets in the bass line, and a great sense of unabashed poppyness are all highlights of the bands sound. It reminds me of when I first discovered the song Halycon and On and On by Orbital. I was just eight years old, and I would listen to that track over and over again thinking, "why doesn't some just make an album where ever song is like this?". Well, someone finally did.

I have heard a lot of different opinions about the finale of Lost in a very short time since it aired last night. Some people are very upset about the lack of explanation's regarding issues that were made to previously appear very, very important to the series. I was aware that not every aspect of the show would be explained, and when I take a step back I am fairly impressed with how much was actually revealed, from who Jacob was to why the character's were all there, to a vague idea of what the smoke monster is. The show does a very good job of humanizing certain elements to the point where many of them can be explained simply by revealing that the character isn't anything unusual at all.

This is exemplified by the exchange between Hurley and Ben at the end of the episode. When Hurley learns that he is Jacob and Jack's replacement, he asks, "What the hell am I supposed to do?"

"You can start by helping Desmond get home."

"But how? People can't leave the island?"

"That's how Jacob ran things, maybe there's another way. A better way."

So the reason that Jacob has a thing about people leaving the island is not explained by some grand truth, it's just the way that he is. He's just a person. It's the way his mother raised him, which we also learn is literally true.

There are still many holes that my theory about the series does not explain, some that I think I could fill in with a little research and many that probably never will (what's with the food drops?) but for the most part I think that I have boiled the island down to a basic supernatural idea.

For lack of a better name, I will call this the Haunted Island Theory

I don't really believe in ghosts, but as a kid I was utterly fascinated by the idea of spirits and hauntings, particularly the various ways that spirits were said to manifest themselves. Some accounts are of seemingly sentient beings who would interact with there experiencer, tell them a story or seem practically human and then vanish without a trace. Others, more commonly, would describe a a spirit that would repeat a particular task over and over again, like walking down a staircase... or cutting down a tree?

While some run in's with the deceased can be explained by the black smoke, Michael pretty clearly explains to Hurley that he and the other whispers are souls that are stuck on the island. Which also help's to explain why Michael is not in the church with the rest of the Losties in the final shots of the series. This also echos a long held legend that ghost's are souls left to roam the earth until they close there unfinished business.

There have also been other types of spirits and manifestations of the dead. The black smoke itself matches the description of many apparitions and, as seen in the episode, the Man In Black's body is obviously no longer living. The black smoke would frequently show people images that appeared to have been from there lives before passing "judgement" on them. Below is a scene of this occurring with Eko.

But when you consider what we have learned about the nature of the show, these visions could actually be what the character perceives as an entire journey into a flash sideways reality. Much like the expression, you're life flashing before your eyes.

One thing that "ghost" lore is fairly consistent with, however, is that hauntings all most always occur in the presence of high electromagnetic activity.

As stated on the website ghosthuntingsecrets.com.

"You asked, 'What evidence is available to prove that a ghost causes or even raises an EMF field?' It has been proven that when a ghost is sighted there is normally a high EMF reading (significant from base/background readings). Whether the EMF is *caused* by the ghost—or whether something else causes the EMF is a subject of debate. "

If we assume that, in the world of Lost, this statement is true, then the island should be teeming with Haunting activity. This starts with the obvious ghostly encounters that we have been discussing, but also would suggest that the location as a whole would have a very thin layer between it and the afterlife which, as we learn in the finale, more like a parallel universe.

In season 2, when the hatch explodes, Desmond is briefly transported through time and space because of a massive release of electromagnetic activity. He does it again in season 6 when he is transported to the flash-sideways timeline (the afterlife) and comes back. As the characters frequently say, Desmond has the "unique ability to withstand high amounts of electromagnetic energy." This could be viewed as the ability to have a near death experience without actually crossing over to the other side. In a similar fashion, we see Ben do the same thing after turning the frozen donkey wheel under the island, which releases yet another large amount of electromagnetic energy and transports him through time and space to a desert in the near future.

If you take the word "Haunted" and define it as a place where this universe, and a parallel one where the deceased may or may not still be existing, then that pretty well sums up the island. Similarly, if you define "Afterlife" as another space and time (parallel universe), similar to this one, where all of your loved ones will be waited when you die, then that pretty much sums up the events of season 6. Even though you are traveling through these different permutations of life together, your loved ones, and your "constant" stays the same.

In the final episode, "The End", Jack asks his father "I don't understand, you died."

"Yes I did."

"Then how are you here right now?"

"How are you here?"

To which Jack suddenly realizes, "I died too."

Of course, this entire conversation takes place in front of a stained glass window adorned with a symbols from six large religions: (from lostpedia.org) the star and crescent of Islam, the Star of David (Judaism), the Aum (widely used as a symbol of Hinduism, but also present in Buddhism and Jainism), the Christian cross, the Dharmacakra (Buddhism) and the Yin/Yang (Taoism). Very subtle.

The point is, is that this idea of the afterlife isn't necessarily magic, to quote Jack's dad "It's all very real", just as real as the life before it and apparently the life that comes after it.

The pieces of this theory can be extrapolated to explain a few of the loose ends of the series, but can't even come close to all of them. Karl pointed out the other day that Walt's power to attracted animals and the others interest in him is also closely related to electromagnetism. Bird's could be thrown out of their flight and barrel into windows, like he caused them to do, if he was somehow exuding large amounts of electromagnetic energy. Possibly, exposure to heavy electromagnetism is what caused difficulties giving birth on the island.

All and all, the conclusion to the series was not at all logically satisfying, but emotionally it was wonderful. It was so great seeing everyone back together, and the poetry of making the final moments of the show the exact opposite of what they were in the pilot was really cool. I also love the *wink wink* moment where it looks like Jack is going to literally "die alone" but then Vincent comes and lays down next to him.

I am sure I will have more thoughts later, but after having one day to let it all sink in, this is where I am at. The ambiguity of the ending reminded me of twin peaks in a lot of ways, with enough lining up to make me believe that producers had planned it the whole time, and enough mystery to let people make up there own answers.

I finally recorded and sent off a tape to Twin Galaxies a few months back, and the scores have finally been updated. It's a bittersweet victory for me because what used to be the 5th highest score ever recorded is now the 8th highest due to a few new contenders, but at least I am in the top ten.

SXSW Round Up

In the latest issue of Bellingham's What's Up! Magazine, I wrote an edition of their "Tales From The Road" column regarding Idiot Pilot's trip to SXSW. If you live in the area you can pick up a copy of the magazine just about anywhere, but for those of you who can't, I've included the full text from the article for your reading pleasure.

Idiot Pilot Settles In At South By Southwest

Since it’s conception in 1987, South By Southwest has become a cornerstone of American indie music, not necessarily indie as a vague genre description, but of literal independent music. The freeway to Austin has become the yellow brick road for up and coming bands, who annually throw their shit in the van and trek from all corners of the world to be noticed at the festival. Of course, once they get there they are often confronted with the inevitable fact that they are simply one of hundreds of other bands who threw their shit in said van and made said trek South. The myth of South By Southwest however, remains intact by the fact that it is a truly great event and that, every once in a while, a band will get caught and lifted out of the sea of other bands to go onto bigger and better things. The festival has evolved as well, to include not only music but film and an “interactive” portion that focuses on technology and the internet.

I have been to South By Southwest twice now and, in direct defiance of my lead in, neither of those times was I signed to an indie label. The first time Idiot Pilot was already signed to a major label, and this time we are free agents, which is important to bring up because it drastically informs a bands reason for attending. For this years trip in particular it meant that we were there to get out and meet people; booking agents, labels, other bands, and everyone in between, and to have fun.

We did the drive to Texas in what we in the band like to call a “straight shot”, which basically means in one long haul without stopping at a hotel or to sleep. From Bellingham to Austin is actually the longest “straight shot” drive in the history of Idiot Pilot, narrowly beating out our trip from Austin to Calgary after our previous SXSW experience by just three hundred and sixty eight miles. (Austin to Calgary is almost exactly 2000 miles on the freeway, for those of you who care.) There were five of us in the van, Ian the manager, Michael and myself as the band, and our two auxiliary band members Chris and Dimiter on drums and bass respectively. The wonderful and talented Paul Turpin flew down to meet us at the festival and run our live sound. Needless to say, by the end of the drive we were all feeling a little delirious and ready to sleep.

Idiot Pilot’s showcase was on the first night of the festival, with a fairly promising 11:00 PM timeslot at a great little venue right across from the world famous Stubb’s Barbeque and right down the street from the equally notorious venue, Emo’s. We loaded in our gear through a street quickly filling with music lovers, bands, and press documenting the action. Fortunately, it wasn’t long before we grabbed the attention of NPR, who asked Ian and Dimiter for a comment about the recent news that Youtube would be working with independent artists on a royalties-per-view program. First day at SXSW and we’ve already got an interview with National Public Radio, not too bad.

The show itself was fantastic. Even though we were initially told that fans could not get in unless they possessed one of the very pricey SXSW passes or an artist wristband and that the venue was twenty-one and over, we quickly learned that neither were true. An hour before show time I sent out a message though our various online channels saying that the gig was actually much easier to attend than previously thought and, somehow, enough Idiot Pilot fans in the area dropped what they were doing and packed the place. There were some familiar faces in the crowd, which is always nice when you are far from home, and even the unfamiliar faces seemed to know the words. Most importantly, we met some great new friends who showed our crew the best late night diner in town for a post show hang out.

The next few days at South By Southwest were spent mingling with various industry folks, running into old friends, or checking out bands. Most of the showcases that I went to were, ironically, from semi-local artists who I could have easily seen without driving across the country. I saw The Globes and Blunt Mechanic from Seattle, waited an hour outside for Past Lives just to catch them packing up there gear, and hung with John from Anacortes’s The Lonely Forest. Getting to catch those guys play was especially great because Idiot Pilot and John Van Deusen have been doing shows together since the both of us were kids, and now that we are all grown up The Lonely Forest is a force to be reckoned with. There set was one of the best I saw all festival; a super tight, well-oiled pop rock machine with all the hooks you could ever need. On the non-local band front, I managed to catch Myspace sensation Lights, Jakob Dylan and Neko Case, Doll And The Kicks, Washed Out, Cymbals Eat Guitars, and the legendary Stone Temple Pilots, among others. Seeing STP rip through a soaring version of The Big Empty is something that has to be seen to be believed.

I also managed to get into a few of the SXSW film premiers while I was there and I was not disappointed. On the third night of the festival Chris and I went to see “The Loved Ones”, an Australian horror feature that has been making the rounds at festivals currently. At the time of our screening it also happened to be the only movie premiering at SXSW that had been picked up by any major distributors, and there is no question why. As a horror connoisseur I can honestly say it is one of the better films I have seen in years, taking all of the best parts of French New Wave Horror and turning them on their head, through a glittery pink lens nonetheless.

The film portion of South By Southwest also insured that, along with various musical personalities strolling around throughout the day (We almost got eaten by Gwar on 6th Street), there are also a few notable actors in attendance. When Dimiter was watching Muse perform he was bumped into by a stranger who mumbled “I’m sorry.” He then turned around to see Bill Murray stumbling away through the crowd.

By the end of the week we had accomplished a lot. We had a great show and made a lot of good connections, done interviews, had fun and seen some fantastic art. As with all matters of business, not all of the details can be shared with the adoring readership of What’s Up just yet, but as they say about SXSW, it’s all about discovery.

Being down here at South By Southwest, I have gotten to see a lot of interesting and new things and although I would love to dive into that right now I am currently sitting in the hotel room exhausted beyond belief and I don't know if I am up for it. Besides, I need to save my energy for a screening of a Bill Hicks documentary that looks amazing, and Past Lives are playing tonight, which is probably going to be the last showcase of the trip.

All this music has got me feeling creative however, and I realized that it has been a long while since I have done any remixes for anyone. In The Future, Nurses Use Bunny Rabbit Chainsaws

Years ago, my then girlfriend was very interested in collecting designer toys. Essentially what these are are very limited edition figures or sculptures, often made of vinyl, that are sold as collectibles and works of art. Designer toy stores are usually limited to the larger metropolitan cities, which makes touring a prefect way to collect them. I believe we were in Manhattan at Kid Robot when Stef found this little lady pictured left. Her name is Kaori The Nurse. At the time we didn't know much about it, other than she looked really cool (which is kind of all that you have to know when it comes to buying these things), but Stef bought her.

Flash-forward to last week, where I ask my friend Little Steph (not to be confused with the aforementioned regular sized Stef) if she had any graphic novels that I could borrow. She gave me something called "Pure Trance", which was a pretty bizarre and thoroughly entertaining read. The most exciting discovery though was the comics main character, Kaori The Nurse. Finally, all of my questions have been answered. Why is she holding a bunny rabbit chainsaw? What's with the little pink haired kid? And most of all, what is Pure Trance?

The graphic novel, written by Junko Mizuno, is a violent, stylized and overtly sexualized version of shōjo manga, which is a particular style of comics marketed too, and written for, teenage girls in Japan. While drawing influence from this world, "Pure Trance" is definitely not for kids, taking a subversive and very adult approach to futuristic subject matter. What results is a psychedelic tale of torture, drug abuse, eating disorders, pop idolization, and a weird skull that can see the future when you feed it. It's great.

Below is an interview with Junko Mizuno, although they don't talk specifically about Pure Trance. There are a lot of examples of her work. Past Lives

I have been listening to the upcoming Past Lives album a lot lately. It's a really interesting venture for half of The Blood Brothers to embark on, not that The Blood Brother's weren't already an interesting band to begin with, but the tone of this recorded is a somewhat unexpected turn. Where their previous work took hardcore into some distant, unknown future where experimentalism ran free, Past Lives is consistently referencing post-hardcore's roots. There are hints of Gang Of Four, Fugazi, and even The Pixies across the board, all of which are well executed enough to feel exciting, like the original bands, instead of derivative. Past Live's is obviously a fitting name.

Vocalist Jordan Billie does a really great job on this album, as well. While the instruments and chord changes around him remain refreshingly simple, Jordan sings notes that augment the voicing very well and turn the chords completely on their heads. It's not quite dissonant, be close enough to stay pleasantly unsettling.

5th Highest Tetris Score Ever Recorded

A while ago I made a post about how I had been attempting the world record of Tetris on the NES. In my previous attempts, until today, I had reached a peak of the 7th highest score ever recorded, but earlier I somehow managed to grab the 5th highest. Here is a video clip from the game.

The score I ended with is 570,426. I am officially submitting this attempt to Twin Galaxies, which is the video game division of Guinness World Records.

Leno Vs. Kimmel

Late night TV has always been dear to my heart, ever since I was getting horrible grades throughout high school from watching Letterman and O'Brien every night and then falling asleep in class. Needless to say, I have been following the whole Tonight Show situation very closely. It's weird to see all of the late night shows referencing each other because for years it seems like they had gone so far out of there way not to, and it's even more unusual to see how many of the Leno and NBC jabs are not the usual softballs getting thrown around, but full-on, pissed off attacks.

I just stumbled across this interview, from just a few days ago, between Jimmy Kimmel and Jay Leno. It's almost jaw dropping how little Kimmel holds back, and it gives me a huge respect for Jimmy. My favorite line, hands down is when Jay innocently asks him the best practical joke he's ever pulled, to which Kimmel responds "I told a guy that five years from now, 'I'm gonna give you my show,' and then when the five years came, I gave it to him and then I took it back almost instantly."

John Malkovich Is The Vulture

Apparently, John Malkovich has just confirmed that he is going to be playing The Vulture in Spider Man 4, during an interview with an Italian sports show. I really didn't care for the last Spider Man movie, in fact, I would probably describe it as a complete mess, but the idea of this is pretty cool to me. Not really sure which direction they are going to go to make The Vulture an interesting villain seeing as his only real powers are A) flying and B) being pretty strong for and old dude. I really like Malkovich, however. I hope he uses his accent from Rounders. If you haven't seen this movie and plan on doing so (which I recommend that you do), don't watch anything after 0:50.

Sydney Briar Is Alive!

I finally got around to seeing Pontypool and it was absolutely amazing. Somehow it felt equal parts George A. Romero zombie flim and Alfred Hitchcock suspense/mystery. I am partial to clever takes on the zombie genre and this is possibly the most inventive I have seen. It also takes huge cues from Orson Welles War of the Worlds broadcast in that most of the movie is presented to you through outside reports and news stories, without ever seeing much of the action yourself, which creates a sense of confusion and anxiety.

The outbreak here is less of a virus, and more off an idea, as confirmed by the films director refraining from the word "zombie" and instead calling the infected "Conversationalists", which I think is pretty fitting. Minor spoilers in the italics ahead, but I just wanted to share these words from director about what exactly the Conversationalist's are because this is a big part of why, for a zombie movie, the zombies are so interesting:

"There are three stages to this virus. The first stage is you might begin to repeat a word. Something gets stuck. And usually it's words that are terms of endearment like sweetheart or honey. The second stage is your language becomes scrambled and you can't express yourself properly. The third stage you become so distraught at your condition that the only way out situation you feel, as an infected person, is to try and chew your way through the mouth of another person."

How frustrating!

I am going to post the trailer again with the hopes that some of you out there will actually go out and try to find this, because it's really great.

The Ghost And The Grace Album Number 2

Sometimes the hardest part of making a really bad ass record is the fact that nobody else gets to hear it but you for months. I wish you people could know what I know right now, because this album makes Behold! A Pale Horse look like a B-sides record. Good things coming. Some of the best moments on this record feel very informed by Desaparecidos, but maybe that's just wishful thinking. Regardless, rock and roll will reign, trumpets will be king, woodwinds with be queen, and the banjo will be trying to be Wormtongue so hard.

Thanks to Dave for pointing this little jem out to me. Apparently Weezer have taken the Andy Kaufman act that they've been doing since Pinkerton to unbelievable new heights lately. Namely, by inviting Kenny G to come out and rip everyones balls off for there recent AOL Live sessions for Raditude. Dude, shreds.

It's shocking to me how at this point most Weezer fans still can't see the connection between this and Kaufman, who was arguably most of the most brilliant artists of our time. Sure I would love to see another Pinkerton, but at this point Rivers dedication to the joke is pretty commendable.

My buddy Kasey Anderson just asked me to help design a show poster for his upcoming tour, and it got me thinking that for as much as I love Kasey's music I have yet to post about him on my blog, despite the fact that I have been sporadically playing on tracks for his upcoming record. There is a lot I could say about Kasey's songs, but the simplest would be that the guy is fucking good. It's the type of rootsy American rock that I wish I could write myself, but every time I try it comes out all mutated into "What Have I Done?" Thankfully he lets me play on his stuff, so I can eventually get my imagination fix of what it would be like to be in the E Street Band.

Four of my friends, Drew, Mark, Jonny, and Wendelin, have a band called Rooftops. I have seen them put on plenty of fantastic shows, but witnessed a particularly killer one tonight.

Rooftops is a math-rock band with post-rock tendencies, and there songs remind me very much of classical compositions in arrangement and performance. Like a violin suite transposed onto three guitars, the songs weave from section to section and use motif as a means of familiarity rather than a recurring chorus. It's refreshing, and on repeat listens the hooks will reveal themselves in really elegant ways.

My favorite author, Bret Easton Ellis, is finally in the first stages of releasing his next book, Imperial Bedrooms. It is a sequel to his first novel, Less Than Zero. Bret is also the genius behind The Rules Of Attraction, Glamorama, and American Psycho.

A few days ago, the international cover art for Imperial Bedrooms was released. Not sure if this is going to be the US version as well, but it looks pretty cool. The publisher, Random House, has also finally released a synopsis:

"Twenty-five years have passed since the events chronicled in Less Than Zero, and Clay Easton, now a successful screenwriter, has returned from a brief stint in New York City to Los Angeles, where he's helping to cast his newest movie, The Listeners. But the more things have changed, the more they stay the same, and Clay is soon drifting around in his familiar old circle. There's his vulnerable former girlfriend, Blair, and her husband, Trent, now a high-powered agent but still a bisexual philanderer; and the parties they host at their Beverly Hills mansion are filled with Hollywood types of various levels of fame and fortune and power. So by now I have managed to check out three of the 10 upcoming films that I wanted to see below, and I wasn't disappointed by a single one. I actually think that Antichrist is not only one of the most disturbing movies that I have ever seen, but one of the best. Unfortunately, it's so extreme I would feel slightly irresponsible recommending it to anyone. I also thought that The Box and The Fourth Kind were both much better than the reviews would have one believe.

(Brief side-note: Universal was just sued by the Alaska Press Club over The Fourth Kind, for fabricating news articles about alien abduction in Nome. They payed 20 grand.)

I just caught another new trailer and this movie looks like a lot of fun. I am a sucker for monster flicks and the concept of this one is pretty damn original. It's like Cthulu, but instead of hanging out underwater this thing lives in the sky. It should also be noted that I am a sucker for all things even remotely Lovecraft.

Here is what the Bloody Disgusting synopsis says about Altitude:

Lost in a mysterious cloudbank, a rookie pilot and her four teenage friends must contend with a freak mechanical failure that first sends their small plane climbing to an impossible height, and then plummeting through endless mist.

After regaining control, the survivors are confronted with a horrifying realization - the very ground beneath them has vanished and a malevolent force lurking in the clouds wants them dead.

My Top Ten Upcoming Horror Films

It's been a while since I posted so I wanted to make sure and put something up here that was specifically blog oriented, no just a repost of some Ghost And The Grace or Idiot Pilot news.

Obviously, being such a huge fan of horror, I adore the Halloween season and sometimes I need a little pick me up once it's gone. Thankfully there have been a whole slew of upcoming films that have caught my attention, so what I wanted to do is make a list of the top ten soon-to-be-released, or just released, horror films that I haven't had the chance to see. These ain't recommendations, obviously, just ranked by my patented anticipation meter. Here we go.

#10 The Wolfman

This looks a lot more fun than frightening, as to be expected, but there is something about this clean, gothic, family-horror look that has a place in my heart. Of course, it has the possibility of veering very quickly into a bloodless PG-13 bore-fest, but it's rating has yet to be given and the cast looks promising.

#9 House Of The Devil

It's really hard to tell whither or not this will be good from the trailer. What it does have going for it, though, is that Ti West did an incredible job of making it look as legitimately vintage as possible. It looks like a spot on homage to early 80s horror.

#8 Splice

Based on what I have seen so far, Splice is the only movie on my list that is scoring any cute points. In fact, it is pretty hard to believe that this little guy could get all that scary, but apparently that is what happens. I suppose they said the same thing about Gizmo in Gremlins and then look what happened. This movie is also produced by Guillermo Del Toro, the genius behind Pan's Labyrinth.

#7 Shutter Island

Scorsese does a horror film. What else do I need to say?

#6 Trick R. Treat

I have been waiting to see this movie for an incredibly long time. In fact, I think that I first heard about it two years ago when it was doing the festival rounds, before then inexplicably disappeared. One might think this was due to a poor reception, but when you look at the reviews it's gotten, that is hard to believe. 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, especially for a horror movie, is shockingly good. It also doesn't hurt that Anna Paquin makes a gorgeous Little Red Riding Hood. This is one of the few on the list that I am sure if I tried I could have seen by now, so really it's nobodies fault but my own.

#5 The Crazies

Something about this trailer just thrills me every time I see it. I have never seen the original film, which was directed by George A. Romero, of Night Of The Living Dead fame (along with countless other "...Of The Living Dead" fames), but it is regarded as a cult favorite. As you may have noted from some of my earlier reviews, I am not one of the purists out there who hate every remake of a horror classic, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were people out there complaining about how different this looks than the original. Whatever. The opening scene alone looks intense enough for me to see this.

#4 The Human Centipede

Just hearing the concept of this film disturbed me so much that I almost feel bad for posting it here. It took about a week of me suddenly and uncontrollably getting grossed out before I could finally push it to be back of my mind, so much so that for a long time my general thoughts on the movie were, "Why would anyone in their right mind want to see that?" Somehow, after about a month and a half, I have come around, if nothing more than to test my gag reflex.

Case in point, three unsuspecting tourists somehow end up at the mercy of a crazy doctor. Not just any crazy doctor, but the leading surgeon in the field of Siamese twin separation, who has decided that the world would be a much better place if he started using his craft to go in the other direction. In other words, to put people together instead of taking them apart. That, unfortunately, is not the disturbing part. All I can say is that his method of connecting the three helpless tourists is through one long gastronomical tract. Use your imagination. Yep, what you think I am saying is what I am actually saying. Sounds like a laugh riot!

#3 Macabre

Aww, the old group-of-teenager's-on-a-road-trip,-car-breaks-down-and-they-have-to-stay-with-a-nutty-family-of-psychos gag. Apparently they haven't had enough of that in Indonesia and I for one am stoked. This is based on a short film that the director's did, which was well received enough to warrant a full feature. Apparently, the plot bears a lot of similarities to Inside, which is a favorite of mine. Let's hope it's more of an homage than a full on rip-off.

#2 The Fourth Kind

Alright, confession time. Aliens scare the fuck out of me. I cannot even begin to tell you how much my childhood nightmares were plaged by the though out waking up to a skinny grey guy with a big head kicking it at the foot of my bed. This leads to countless films where the general public seems to say, "meh", and I am left with the distinct impression that that was the scariest thing I have seen in my life (Fire In The Sky anyone?) Good god, even the way they pixelate that ladies face scares me.

#1 Antichrist

Remember how Dancer In The Dark was one of the most depressing things you could possibly subject yourself to? Well Lars Von Trier is at it again with Antichrist. Apparently it's nothing less than the directors usual shocking approach, put into a horror package. Add to that that the fact that a central axis of the movie is the idea that women are inherently evil, and you've got yourself a fairly controversial little piece of work. Maybe that is why some people are saying that it is "The most shocking film in the history of the Cannes Film Festival."

The Death Of Georgia Pacific

Yesterday I went on an expedition with two wonderful folks, Jettie and Natalie, into the heart of what used to Bellingham's 37 acre industrial center, Georgia Pacific, which ran from 1963 until 2001. Eventually the site will be completely demolished and some sort of massive, park/marina/shopping center, who knows? But until then it will remain a magical landmark of the city. This is a short film I made about the death of this massive site. Enjoy.

Sufjan Stevens Loves Too Much

Finally, after long last, Sufjan Stevens is finally preforming new material. During his current tour he has busted out at least 4 new songs, all of which are outrageously rad. A few things you will notice right off the bat, first, there is much less banjo and much more electric guitar, in fact, there is no banjo on these. Second, unlike most previous tracks, there has been the welcome addition of drum programming and other electronics, and third, these songs are loooooooong.

The standout track absolutely has the be the shamelessly poppy "There's Too Much Love", which boasts one of the strongest hooks I have heard in ages. If this song is on the next record I would not be surprised if Sufjan's popularity entered the next stratosphere. I guess they would probably have to trim off about 3 minutes first.

So the second Idiot Pilot record that I recorded featured two drummers, for those of you readers out there that don't already know. One was Travis Barker, who is known mostly for his work with Blink-182, and the other was Chris Pennie who, at the time, was the drummer for Dillinger Escape Plan.

I think it is fair to assume that your average person is going to be more familiar with the work of Blink-182 than Dillinger, and that is a shame because Dillinger Escape Plan is arguably the best Mathcore band of all time. But then again, something tells me pop punk is going to get into radio rotation a little faster than this:

Anyway, I wanted to dedicate today's post to a live video that I remember finding of the band a few years back. Have you ever wanted to see a singer run on peoples faces? Now you have.

I don't talk about it much, but I have to confess, I absolutely love the show Dexter. Maybe it's my preoccupation with Lost discussion that has pushed my Dexter rants to the wayside, after all there is only so much room on my blog that I can dedicate to serialized TV. But since I just finished watching season 3 and season 4 is coming up quickly in the next few months.

Oh yeah, and John Lithgow has joined the cast as Dexter's serial killing rival. So stoked.

Michael C. Hall is a fantastic actor, right up there with Christina Bale when it comes to portraying heartless serial killers, and yet somehow he has managed, over the course of 3 seasons, to give Dexter a heart without making him any less believable.

Dylan's Christmas Is Coming

Today I finished up the writing fifteenth demo for the next full length Ghost And The Grace record and am debating whither or not to record a few more to choose from. While I consider my options, however, there is another project that I am going to dive into, which is The Ghost And The Grace Christmas record, or EP, or whatever. The funny thing about making Christmas records is that if you want to have it done in time for the holiday season then you need to start it really early when the sun is shining and Christmas is the last thing on your mind.

Apparently Bob Dylan has the same idea, because suddenly a bunch of people are posting around the net that the legend plans on releasing his first ever Christmas record this year. Some songs that have already been confirmed are "Must Be Santa", "I'll be Home for Christmas", "Here Comes Santa Claus" and "O Little Town of Bethlehem". The concept of this is actually pretty exciting for me, as I am always thrilled for more good Christmas music. I only hope that he goes the extra step of not just covering the classics but also adding to that ever expanding catalog of holiday tracks in existence.

Scott Marshall, an author who penned a book about Dylan, is quoted as saying "At first glance it may sound bizarre, but I don't think Dylan cares much about what his detractors might make of it". I don't get that at all, some of the best Christmas albums are folk records.
